RadarLab X Help Guide
Q: How do I enable overlays like warnings, storm tracks, etc.?
Navigate to the overlays menu. This menu may be found in the upper-left corner of the viewport.
Once the overlays menu appears, look for the overlay you would like to enable, and click the toggle button to add it to the map.
You may notice the overlays menu features multiple tabs. The “data” tab, which pertains to meteorological data overlays, is selected by default. To overlay geographical information, e.g. county boundaries, click on the “places” tab to view a list of available overlays. Similarly, to switch between background maps, or “underlays”, click on the “backgrounds” tab.
Q: How do I enable the winter mask?
Navigate to the overlays menu. This menu may be found in the upper-left corner of the viewport.
To enable the winter mask, use the display options dropdown menu (gear icon) next to the “Radar” overlay toggle.
Â
This will present you with a list of tweaks you can apply to the radar. This includes the winter mask, but additionally features toggles for smoothing/radial interpolation, timestamps, legend display, as well as a slider for controlling the dBZ cutoff filter and image opacity.
Q: How do I filter NWS watches, warnings and advisories?
Navigate to the overlays menu. This menu may be found in the upper-left corner of the viewport.
To toggle the display of different kinds of warnings, use the display options drown menu (gear icon) next to the “WWAs” overlay toggle. This will present you with a list of WWA types to filter from, as well as timestamp and legend display toggles.
Q: How do I switch between local and national radar data?
By default, RadarLab X will display national radar in single-pane mode, and prompt you to select a site if entering multi-pane mode. To go from local to national in single-pane mode, press the “Site Selection” button in the upper-left corner of the viewport and select a site either using the drop-down menu or by clicking on the map. You can revert back to national radar by clicking the site selection button (which will be labeled with the current site ID once a local NEXRAD/TDWR site has been loaded) and selecting “Switch to National Radar” in the menu that appears.
If you wish to no longer be prompted to select a site when entering multi-pane, or you would like to always launch RadarLab X to a local NEXRAD/TDWR site instead of the national map, enter the settings menu (accessible using the menu in the upper-right corner of the viewport) and select “workspaces”. Here, you can customize your single-pane, dual-pane and quad-pane workspaces to your liking.
Q: RadarLab X will not run on my computer. Why?
First, ensure your system meets the minimum system requirements:
- Processor: Multi-core Intel, AMD, or Apple Silicon CPU (2.5 GHz or faster)
- Memory: 8 GB or more, DDR3 or newer
- Graphics: Dedicated GPU with at least 2 GB VRAM recommended. Integrated graphics are supported, but not ideal.
- Display: 1920×1080 or larger
- Network: 50 Mbps or higher download speed
- OS: Windows 10 (11 prefered), macOS Sequoia 15.3.2
Hardware released prior to 2016 is not officially supported.
After verifying your system meets this criteria, refer to the Troubleshooting page for more information. Additionally, ensure you’re running the latest version of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari or Microsoft Edge. Other Chromium-based browsers such as Brave and Opera GX are not officially supported, although it’s still possible to run RadarLab X with them.
All things considered, RadarLab X is an open beta product. It’s an experimental program utilizing bleeding-edge web technologies, and as such, if hardware and software is a tight constraint, we suggest using the classic RadarLab product until cross-platform support and overall stability improves. Additionally, we will be continuing to maintain and support the classic RadarLab product until 2027, at which point it will still be available to weatherTAP subscribers but won’t see future updates.
