RadarLab X Help Guide

In the event of a crash, the web client will display a “Runtime Error” message as well as an error code and debug log. This information can be forwarded to developers for further analysis. This could indicate a bug with the software, or an underlying browser support issue depending on the issue reported. See the “weatherTAP Support” section below for information on contacting support and ensuring this crucial information makes its way to the RadarLab X development team.

  • Processor: Multi-core Intel, AMD, or Apple Silicon CPU (2.5 GHz or faster)
  • Memory: 8 GB or more, DDR3 or newer
  • Graphics: Dedicated GPU with at least 2 GB VRAM recommended. Integrated graphics are supported, but not ideal.
  • Display: 1920×1080 or larger
  • Network: 50 Mbps or higher download speed
  • OS: Windows 10 (11 prefered), macOS Sequoia 15.3.2

Hardware released prior to 2016 is not officially supported.

Technical Notes

  • Web browser must support WebGL 2, WebAssembly, and SharedArrayBuffer
  • Graphics device must support 16384×16384 textures

If your system meets the system requirements outlined above, but you experience poor performance in RadarLab X using a Chromium-based browser (e.g. Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera GX), it could be due to a process known as “GPU blocklisting”. RadarLab X makes extensive use of WebGL, which demands hardware acceleration to achieve ideal performance. Chromium-based browsers will make assumptions about your GPU and infer whether or not to use it for rendering based on its known capabilities and/or known issues, effectively “blocklisting” GPUs it deems unfit to run the software. Often times, this assumption is incorrect, and the program may run smoothly if the GPU blocklist is bypassed altogether.

To bypass the GPU blocklist, perform the following steps:

  1. In the URL bar, type in chrome://flags/#ignore-gpu-blocklist.
  2. Using the drop-down menu on the right, change “Disabled” to “Enabled”.
  3. Restart the browser and relaunch RadarLab X.

If this still doesn’t improve performance, ensure you’re running the appropriate drivers for your GPU. If issues persist, contact weatherTAP support.

Using older versions of macOS and/or Safari may result in issues running RadarLab X. Intel Macs are supported, but Apple Silicon (M* chip) Macs are preferred. If you encounter issues running RadarLab X on macOS, try updating macOS and Safari to the latest version. Safari has a tendency to “lag behind” current web standards, although support is improving gradually with each update. For this reason, we do not recommend using RadarLab X with old versions of Safari. Version 18 or newer is recommended.

Additionally, users of older Intel Macs may notice performance problems in WebKit-based browsers overall (e.g. Google Chrome, Safari). This is partially due to primitive WebGL support in browsers targeting older versions of macOS. Interestingly, no performance issues have been observed using Mozilla Firefox on these older systems. Ergo, if you’re using an Intel Mac, we suggest using RadarLab X with Mozilla Firefox if the previous suggestions prove unsuccessful.
